Design Concepts
The new concept was to divide the garden up into a series of rooms each with a different theme. A curving path through the garden would join the rooms and take the viewer on a winding journey from the existing Eastern influenced patio through a Mediterranean area to an English garden with bower style pergola and lawn area ending in the fruit garden. Different sitting areas provide opportunities to track the sun traps providing opportunities for morning coffee, afternoon tea and evening G&T at a BBQ.
As new future planting is added to include some height with feature plants such as fan palms and large hardy Fortunei Palms or Fatsias to create screening, plus low level informal planting in the Mediterranean gravelled areas with Thyme, Marjoram, Rosemary Euphorbia, dotted with terracotta pots and statement large stones and a curve of vertical sleepers) there will be a sense of surprise and discovery as you move from one area of the garden to the next taking you on towards English roses, Fox gloves, Peonies and large daisies in the English garden before you reach the delights of the fruit garden in the final 'room'.
Suggestions for landscaping materials and planting ideas were shared with the client on a Pinterest board during the the design process as ideas developed. You can see this here. Drama was created with the introduction of two contrasting scenes or focuses - that of a Mediterranean style patio complete with faux shutters and and English band stand style patio on circular paving providing the perfect framework for climbing roses or wysteria. The client wanted low maintenance and this was achieved by reducing the lawn area and size of the borders, introducing hard landscaping around the fruit garden and using weed matt combined with mulch with stones and bark.

AFTER landscaping prior to new planting
"I wanted for a long time to re-design my garden but the first plan I had from another designer was quite dull. Thomasina met with me and quickly spotted that I wanted a design with more glamour, dramatic impact and more interesting use of space with a planting scheme to match.
Her design was easy to execute and I am so incredibly pleased with the result. It has transformed the way I use my garden and it lifts my spirits every time I look out of the window. "
